Hopi Casaba

  • F011
  • Cucumis melo. From Moenkopi on the Hopi Nation.  There are two distinct fruit types within this collection: (1) wrinkled, round, yellow-green fruits; and (2) smoothly elongated yellow-green fruits. Both can have pale green to orange flesh. Juicy with a mild flavor, though melon flavor can vary widely based on soil and rainfall. Tasty with chile, salt and lime. Good keepers if unbruised. From our Seed-Bank Collection.

Prolific drought-tolerant melon

I’m growing this for the first time this summer in the foothills of Los Angeles county and it is taking off! While the watermelon I’ve tried to grow seems to hate my (probably acidic) clay soil, the Hopi melon loves it and is growing faster than I can keep up with. Also both the honeybees and native bees love it

Excited to eat some ripe melons!

So far everything is going great. In fact, so many plants came up I gave some to a friend. Can’t wait to try the melons!

Grow them you will not regret it

I'm not sure if it was all of the love and care given to them over the centuries from the Hopi people but these are amazing. Be sure to grow enough because once you taste one you will be CAREFULLY monitoring when the next one will be ripe. Trust me on that.
