Rarámuri (Tarahumara) Crafts

The Rarámuri (Tarahumara) live in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Southwest Chihuahua, Mexico. They are subsistence farmers raising traditional varieties of corn, beans, and squash. Many aspects of their lives have changed little over the past 1,000 years, and closely resemble the prehistoric Mogollon Culture of Southern New Mexico and Arizona. Their baskets and crafts utilize locally available raw materials found in Chihuahua's deep tropical canyons and vine and Apache pine tree covered mountain ranges.
NS/S has a long history of stewarding Rarámuri seeds and supporting Rarámuri artists. The first Rarámuri seed accessions were added to the collection in 1983, and our oldest accession dates back to 1975!
